Our Mission

The Mission Of Columbia American Legion Post 300 Is To Serve Veterans And Active Military And Families, Children And Youth And The Howard County Community.
Veteran Suicide Prevention Is Our Top Priority.
How We Achieve Our Mission
We achieve our mission by asking our members to call all Veterans in Howard County with “Buddy Checks”. We have written guidelines, access to immediate professional assistance or scheduled visits to mental health professionals if indicated. We visit isolated members living alone or in Assisted Living Facilities in our Outreach Program to offer Veterans Benefits resources, friendly conversation or even to deliver a hot meal. Our goal is to ensure that every Veteran and Family is remembered, respected, valued and cared for. No Veteran should be left behind. We have relationships with dozens of support organizations including the VA, MDVA, Howard County Officer of Veterans and Military Families. We provide connections and answers. After suicide prevention is our campaign to raise awareness of Caregiving Resources as our Veterans age and face mobility issues.
For Children and Youth we sponsor Scout Troop 540 in Fulton/Maple Lawn. Our officers present the American Legion Good Citizenship Award at the promotion ceremony of every Eagle Scout. We offer Youth opportunities to experience Americanism, such as Flag Retirement Ceremonies. They can cut unserviceable Flags before the symbolic burning ceremony attended by all Veterans Service Organizations, Scouts, Civil Air Patrol and citizens. Our Scouts hold our Post 300 Parade Banner in Columbia’s Veterans Day Parade and in the Clarksville Independence Day Parade.

Our History

Founded in 2003, Columbia Post 300 is the fastest growing Post in the state of Maryland, having increased from 194 members in 2022 to 300 members in March 2024. The reason is we have a strong array of Programs open to members. We have a strong History Program with a foundation of member and leadership programs emphasizing preserving and protecting our legacy.
Our Future
Post 300 has a designated Post Historian who attends over 100 meetings and events throughout the year, photographing each one and documenting the significance for posterity. Our Post photo History Report for June 2022 to June 2033 was recognized by the Commander of the Northern Central District of the American Legion Department of Maryland as the best. One hundred separate events are captured in 100 photos. Our Historian was presented with a First “Membership Legionnaire of the Year” Trophy. Currently we are building a record of member experiences in the armed forces based on their personal recollections in “Vignettes”. Members share their memories orally at our monthly meetings. The vignettes will be accessible on our website so members, families and the public can read about their Veterans’ memories. We are planning visits to Historically significant museums, ships and other opportunities such as Baltimore Ship Week.
